Garrett McNamara
Garrett McNamara was the first person to get whipped into a big wave by a helicopter, the first to surf the giant waves created by calving glaciers in Alaska (yeah, you read that right). A pioneer at acclaimed big-wave spots like Teahupoo and Peahi, he has taken off deeper than anyone else and survived not only the wave but also the horrific wipeouts. Garrett has won virtually every big-wave award and tow-in contest in existence but contrary to popular belief, Garrett was not born without the fear gene. Fear is actually integral to his survival— Garrett just doesn’t feel right unless his heart rate is elevated to ridiculous levels and his adrenal glands are pumping out more epinephrine than an army of chemists. It’s a selfish but honest pursuit.
